About
Welcome to Wayang Restaurant Halal, a delightful corner of Alhambra where authentic Indonesian cuisine comes to life. Nestled at 1936 W Valley Blvd, Alhambra, CA 91803, this charming eatery has been garnering attention for its homemade dishes crafted with love and care. The owner and chef pours her heart into every meal, ensuring that each plate is made fresh and cooked to order. If you're looking for a truly authentic dining experience, Wayang is a must-visit.
The restaurant's menu features an impressive array of dishes that highlight the richness of Indonesian flavors. The Nasi Goreng, priced at $12.99, is a beloved staple that promises comfort in every bite. Fans of noodles will appreciate the Mie Goreng at $13.99, perfectly cooked with that unforgettable wok hei flavor. Other highlights include:
What truly sets Wayang apart is the care put into every dish. Customer reviews echo a common theme; the food is consistently described as "delicious" and "authentic." Tim S. raved about the impressive quality, noting how everything is fresh and made from scratch. This sentiment resonates with patrons who appreciate the homely atmosphere and the commitment to quality. The ambiance of the restaurant is reminiscent of a mom-and-pop establishment, adorned with charming Indonesian decor that invites you to relax and indulge.
However, it's worth mentioning that due to its small staff, diners may experience shorter wait times for their mouthwatering dishes, but the payoff is certainly worth it. The rich and complex flavors make every moment of waiting disappear as you savor the anticipation of an exceptional meal. As Joanne K. pointed out, the chicken satay, with its slightly sweet and nutty sauce, is a must-try that exemplifies the unique taste of Indonesian cuisine.
As for beverages, Wayang offers refreshing options including soft drinks and, at times, complimentary soups. The cheerful vibe and community focus of Wayang Restaurant Halal make it not just a spot to eat, but a place to feel connected. Zoe T. described it as a "hidden gem" that deserves recognition, and we couldn't agree more. With ongoing promotions and specials, it's worthwhile to follow their updates on social media.
In conclusion, at Wayang Restaurant Halal, every dish tells a story. It's more than just a meal; it’s an experience filled with flavor, culture, and warmth. So why not stop by to support this local treasure? Enjoy a plate of Nasi Kuning Komplit or a vibrant Mie Goreng and embrace the culinary traditions that make Indonesian food so special.

“ Great Indonesian food. The owner/chef puts her heart into each dish and makes everything from scratch. Everything is made fresh and cooked to order. Please stop on by and support this small business. Parking is in the rear. ”
“ Parking: Got street parking for an hour in front of the restaurant wasn't difficult at all. They're understaffed, but didn't feel like we waited too long for our food. Although, there's 3 parties in the restaurant currently! Ambiance is mom and pop. Has simple Indonesian decor. They offer cassava chips and sprite, Dr. pepper, Diet Coke. Food was so good! We got the chicken satay- it comes in a deliciously rich, slightly sweet, nutty sauce and some rice cakes cubes that I've never had before. Kwetiau goreng udang - tastes like it was properly cooked in a wok. Reminds me of a Thai dish called pad see ew, with the wide flat noodles. But the flavors is different. Love the fried shallots on top. Nasi kuning Komplit This combines the fried chicken, the beef rendang. Comes with this mash potato mixture, cold cucumbers, fried egg with the hot sauce, a fried tofu. The beef rendang was so tender! Curious why this place isn't more popping! ”
“ Authentic delicious Indonesian food, what else is there to say! This restaurant is pretty short staff, I think there was just the waitress and one chef in the back. Expect some wait times because of the lack of staff and they make all the food fresh. Besides that, the food is bomb, I tried out these items. Nasi Bungkus - Tons of rice but everything was so good. Perfectly season and the meats were all very tender. Just a solid dish. (5/5) Nasi Kuning Komplit - The yellow rice was so good. Really good dish with many different items that are all good. You can't go wrong with this dish. (5/5) Service here is easily probably a 3/5 since they are short staffed but food is a 5/5. Support your local restaurants and this place is worth trying if you're open to a longer wait. It wasn't too crowded when I came on Saturday which was great. They do accept credit cards now but they have a 3% added fee. Bring cash/zelle to avoid the extra fees. Parking - There is one hour parking in front ( maybe only 4 - 5 spots) and two hour parking on the sides. Therefore parking is kind of limited. ”
“ We were craving Indonesian food last night and decided to try this restaurant in Alhambra. It was later in the evening so it was empty inside. We were told by our server that it was much busier during lunch. Undeterred, we entered the dining room looking forward to our dinner. The menu has a broad range of choices. We went with the nasi bungkus and the ayam kremes. They ran a couple of specials which we took advantage of, including the tasty and free soup. The food was flavorful and spicy. We also ordered an es teler, which really helped calm down the spice. I will note that the fried chicken in the ayam kremes was a bit dry to our liking. Otherwise, everything was fine. Note that they add 3% if use credit card, but do offer Zelle for those of us who don't want to pay that additional fee. We would come back, probably during lunch so we can get a better sense of the vibe. ”
“ Wayang is a true hidden gem in Alhambra! I have always wanted to try this place when it was previously Wong Java and finally got a chance this past Wednesday. No other customers were there when we arrived, so we had the whole place to ourselves. There was just one lady working the front (and I think she also cooked our food as well), and she was very nice and took our orders. We ordered nasi kuning komplit, lab satay, and mie goreng. For the month of September, they were doing free lemonade and 15% off, as well as free soup on weekends--check on their Instagram or website for the current deal of the month. The inside of the restaurant is very cute and homey--they have lots of photos on some of the walls and a TV playing Indonesian karaoke. Our food arrived 15 minutes after we ordered because they had to cook it, and everything was super delicious and came out nice and hot. The mie goreng had delicious wok hei/smoky aroma because the noodles were charred perfectly. The lamb satay had a delicious sweet and tangy sauce and was served with lontong (pieces of compressed rice cakes) to dip in the sauce. The nasi kuning komplit had delicious tumeric rice, beef rendang, spicy sambal on a fried egg, fried chicken (which was a little dry), a potato ball, fried tofu, and cucumbers. My husband and sister-in-law were in love with the lamb satay and mie goreng (they said they could each eat a whole plate by themselves), so we will definitely be back for more (and to try their other food)! ”
“ Parking is limited, how ever you can park near the street way. The restaurant is small but clean. The food is excellent !!! I like the perkedel and nasi kuning. Service is good ”
“ Been coming where before they changed the name and I feel like they are stepping up the game with the new branding and marketing! They reduced the menu items for sure, but my favorites are still in the menu like Tempe Mendoan and Ayam Kremes. They offer free (sour) soup, Sayur Asem, every weekend and also home ad Lemonade. Their es teler is legit good but I wouldn't order their Cendol anymore, it needs some improvement in taste and texture. Parking is available in the back as usual or on the side. ”
“ Had a lovely lunch here. Staff were very attentive and friendly. Customer service was great. The flavors were very yummy and tasted like a home cooked meal. Definitely a hidden gem. I will be returning. ”
“ This is a little hole in the wall in the outskirts of Alhambra. Food is very authentic. I got the Nasi complete which in Malaysia I would call a Nasi lemak. Very tasty. The sambal was spicy. The Kuey teau goreng was pretty good too. Service was friendly. There's ample street parking. ”
